An Action Research on the Effectiveness of Differentiated Instruction In Teaching English for Grade Four Classes

By
Mary Joy V. Olicia
Researcher

I. Introduction

Like Science and Math, English is a difficult but an important subject because the curriculum considers it as a tool subject needed to understand the different content subjects. Basically, it is concerned with developing competencies in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and viewing. Speaking includes skills in using the language expressions and grammatical structures correctly in oral communication while writing skill includes readiness skills, mechanics in guided writing, functional and creative writing (K to 12 Curriculum Guide for Grade 4).
The K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum aims to help learners understand that English language is involved in the dynamic social process which responds to and reflects changing social conditions. It is also inextricably involved with values, beliefs and ways of thinking about the person and the world people dwell. The curriculum aims that pupils are given an opportunity to build upon their prior knowledge while utilizing their own skills, interests, styles, and talents.
However, teachers find difficulties in teaching different kinds of pupils with different intellectual capacities, talent or skills, interest, and learning styles especially in heterogeneous groupings of pupils. This situation calls for teachers to create lessons for all pupils based upon their readiness, interests, and background knowledge. Anderson (2007) noted that it is imperative not to exclude any child in a classroom, so a differentiated learning environment must be provided by a teacher.
Differentiated instruction is based on the concept that the teacher is a facilitator of information, while students take the primary role of expanding their knowledge by making sense of their ability to learn differently (Robinson, Maldonado, & Whaley, 2014).
Wilson (2009) argued that differentiated instruction is the development of the simple to the complex tasks, and a difference between individuals that are otherwise similar in certain respects such as age or grade are given consideration. Additionally, Butt and Kusar (2010) stated that it is an approach to planning, so that one lesson may be taught to the entire class while meeting the individual needs of each child.
According to Tomlinson (2009), DI as a philosophy of teaching is based on the premise that students learn best when their teachers accommodate the differences in their readiness levels, interests, and learning profiles. It sees the learning experience as social and collaborative. The responsibility of what happens in the classroom is first to teacher, but also to the learner (Subban, 2006). Additionally, DI presents an effective means to address learner’s variance which avoids the pitfalls of the one-size-fits-all curriculum. Stronge (2004) and Tomlinson (2004b) claimed that addressing student differences and interest enhance their motivation to learn and make them to remain committed and to stay positive as well.
Stravroula (2011) conducted a study in investigating the impact of DI in mixed ability classrooms and found out that the implementation of differentiation had made a big step in facing the negative effects of socio-economic factors on students’ achievement by managing diversity effectively, providing learning opportunities for all students. The positive change in students’ achievement had shown that differentiation can be considered as an effective teaching approach in mixed ability classrooms.
Furthermore, Servilio (cited by Robinson, 2014) studied the effectiveness of using DI to motivate students to read and found out that an average of 83.4% of the students’ grades improved in reading, 12.5% remained the same, and 41% of the grades decreased.
As educator, the teacher-researcher was motivated to conduct this action research on the effectiveness of DI in teaching English on Grade Four pupils for a week-long lesson. She also she wanted to know the effect of this method on the academic performance of the pupils from results of the diagnostic and achievement test.

II. Statement of the Problem

This study determined the effectiveness of conducting DI to Grade Four English class. Specifically, it answered the following.

A University In Visayas Is Offering A 'Dota 2' Course For Senior High Students

As e-sports gain more visibility in the media (thanks, TNC Pro Team!), a similar trend is starting to spread through the academia.

The University of The Visayas New School (UVNS) is the latest supporter of competitive gaming, as it officially opens its e-sports and game development program through their Senior High Arts and Design track this year.

“We’ll have game strategy for Dota 2 and we will have game design and development animation and 2D and 3D animation, and of course, game creation. After two years, the students can either choose to be game creators, designers, or e-sports players in the professional league,” Genesis Raña, founder and school director of UVNS, said in an interview.

The core subjects for the e-sports track are the following: theory, mechanics, strategy, and game awareness. They’ll also tackle game design, branding, and entrepreneurship.

The university will also be providing the students with state of the art gaming equipment such as the Nacrono gaming keyboard, Sauris gaming mouse, and Poison P8 gaming headset. UVNS is also bringing students the Oculus Development Kit 2 for the ultimate virtual reality experience.

May last year, UVNS was recognized by Apple as a Distinguished Program for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence. They are one of the three schools in the Philippines recognized by Apple and the only school in VisMin.

UVNS, located in Mandaue, is one of the eight campuses of the University of the Visayas.

DepEd to review K-12 program

The Department of Education (DepEd) will conduct a “thorough review” of its K to 12 education program, two years after it was implemented in various schools nationwide.
“We are going to have a thorough review of the curriculum of the Department of Education. After all, we have been there for two years already so we have made enough experience,” DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said in a Palace briefing.
“We will review the curriculum from Kindergarten to Grade 12 because we have been getting feedback as well and we are welcoming feedback from the public about curriculum content,” she added.
Briones said DepEd did not elaborate what “feedback” the agency has been receiving, but stressed the need to keep up with changing times, especially in the age of technological innovations.
“Two years have passed. We need to review it because right now, changes are occurring. Many things are happening in this world,” Briones said.
The education chief said she had observed, for instance, how the demand to teach students on “speaking beautiful English” to be able to compete in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry was problematic.
“There was a demand before that we should teach our children more English so they could compete in the BPO, the call center. But call centers are now replaced with robots in other countries. So if we are preparing our children to speak beautiful English for call centers, then perhaps we will truly be left behind,” Briones said.
“We have to teach our children to be the ones to make the robots. This is why we are teaching robotics in high schools. This is why we are sending teams, public school, high school kids to other countries and they are winning in robotics contests,” she added.
Briones said what’s more important than memorization is for students to be taught how to analyze and solve problems.
“What we want our children to learn, which probably my generation did not learn, is not memory work, we teach them how to analyze, how to solve problems, how to respond to change and to accept change because by the time they graduate, whatever we have taught them, not all of them will be applicable. They will not be able to recognize the world they are going to enter,” Briones said.
“Change is happening so fast but it is in dealing with the change that we want our children to gain more life skills,” she added.
The K to 12 Program covers 13 years of basic education from Kindergarten to Grade 3, Grades 4 to 6, Grades 7 to 10 (Junior High School), and Grades 11 and 12 (Senior High School).
Meanwhile, Briones said her agency is also set to rationalize its budget.
“My priority is our financial management system. We have to review and we have to reformulate our accounting, our disbursement, our accountability systems because of the hugeness of the department itself,” Briones said.
Under the proposed PHP 3.757 trillion national budget for 2019, the DepEd gets the highest cut at PHP 659.3 billion which will also include funding for free tuition in state universities and colleges (SUCs). (PNA)

DepEd to hire 75K teachers with ‘different skills’

To boost its senior high school program, the Department of Education (DepEd) needs to hire more teachers who are not only academically-trained but are also equipped with different skills, Education Secretary Leonor Briones said.
“Before, we relied on academically-trained teachers. This time, we need teachers with different skills,” Briones said in a Palace press briefing Wednesday.
Under senior high school program, Briones said they need to field teachers based on four components: academic, technical/vocational, sports, and arts and design.
“So we need different kinds of teachers these days,” Briones said.
The DepEd has started the implementation of the senior high school (SHS) curriculum in 2015 as part of the K to 12 program.
Briones admitted DepEd has a lot of catching up to do but clarified there is no shortage of qualified teachers.
“So I would not describe it fully as a shortage, but as a reordering, as a reform in the content of education which we are introducing,” she said.
Briones thanked the Department of Education (DBM) for allowing DepEd to hire a maximum of 75,000 teachers, many of them should be proficient in English, Match and Science.
She said the DepEd’s request to hire more teachers aims to bring down the teacher-student ratio to 1:25 at the kindergarten/elementary level and to 1:40 at high school level.
“We are trying to reduce that if we get all the teachers that we want. And this is why we need additional teachers,” Briones said.
Briones said public school teachers enjoy higher salaries compared to their counterparts from the private schools.
“The average salary for grade one for the public school would be PHP21,000 plus two-month vacation, two weeks Christmas vacation and all other benefits – and the private sector cannot catch up with that,” she said.
She said DepEd has allowed over 500 of the 947 private schools that applied for tuition fee hike with the condition that 70 percent of the tuition fee should be used for teachers’ salaries. (PNA)

LGUs should decide on class suspensions, DepEd asserts

Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones on Wednesday opposed calls to bring back the task of suspending classes during rainy days to her agency, stressing that local government units were in a better position to do so.

READ: #WalangPasok: August 21, 22 and 27, national non-working Holiday

“It used to be the task of the DepEd but the public was complaining. Usually what we want to do, what lawmakers wanted to do is to save time,” Briones said.
Briones also pointed out that the country has over 7,000 islands with very different weather conditions so it made better sense for local executives to declare class suspensions.
“We have varying weather conditions this is why local government units are so much more on the ground. The reason behind the policy of asking local government units is they would be much faster. They are right there where the flood is, where the storm is,” Briones said.
Moreover, she said that local executives also knew about their constituents’ concerns.
“It is usually the local officials who love their people and immediately go out when there is a storm or disaster to find out what is happening. They go there much faster and earlier than we can ever do so,” she added.
Briones, however, acknowledged that local executives would usually get the blame for the timeliness of suspending classes.
“The issue here is who gets the blame. Some local government units are not happy about being blamed as to the timeliness of the decision,” Briones said.
Earlier, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) also rejected calls to revert the authority to suspend classes to the DepEd, noting that there were local disaster risk reduction management councils tasked to monitor rainfall, flooding, and landslides in their localities.
DILG Assistant Secretary Epimaco Densing III, meanwhile, said his agency is currently eyeing the creation of guidelines for suspension of classes amid concerns that some local executives fail to suspend classes on time.
Executive Order No. 66 gives local chief executives the authority to suspend classes during heavy rains and massive flooding even without a storm signal. (PNA)
