MANILA, Philippines - The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and the Board of Professional Teachers (Board) announced that only registered and licensed Professional Teachers (LET passers) will be allowed to use and append to their names the professional title “LPT.”

Pursuant to Board Resolution No. 01 – 2017, appending professional title "LPT" will give an impression that the bearer is a bona fide registered and licensed professional.

The application wil be the same with other recognized professional titles such as MD for Medical Doctor, RN for Registered Nurse, Engr. for Engineer, RPT for Registered Physical Therapist, to name a few.

According to Republic Act No. 7836, otherwise known as the Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994, it is punishable for any person to practice the teaching profession in the Philippines without having been registered and licensed to engage as such; or to, in connection with his/her name, otherwise assume, use or advertise any title or description tending to conveyor which conveys the impression that he/she is a teacher without holding a valid certificate for such purpose.

Arum on Pacquiao vs. Horn: It's The Young Lion vs. Old Lion

BRISBANE, Australia - Veteran boxer Manny Pacquiao said Monday he plans to show he is "not done yet" when he defends his world title against Australia's Jeff Horn in Brisbane in July.

The eight-weight world champion said the bout with the undefeated Horn was an opportunity to prove he could continue to be a global force at the age of 38 as he juggles boxing with a full-time job in politics.
"(I want) to defend my crown and prove that I'm still there in boxing, despite of my ambitions in office as a senator," he told reporters on an Australian visit to promote the July 2 bout.

"I'm still handling my boxing career. I'm still there. I'm not done yet in boxing."

Pacquiao first won a world title at flyweight (112lb) two weeks before his 20th birthday in December 1998 to start a storied career that has seen him win global belts all the way up to super welterweight (154lb).
"Boxing is my passion. I started when I was young - it's part of my life," said Pacquiao.

"It depends on how you discipline yourself, how you train and prepare yourself. It's a matter of discipline."
"Pac-Man", who briefly retired early last year before making a successful comeback against Jessie Vargas in Las Vegas in November, added that he was excited to face Horn, 29, in the WBO welterweight title fight at the 55,000-capacity Suncorp Stadium.

"I'm not going to predict the fight but I will do my best to entertain the fans," he said.

"I'm very excited to fight here, I've fought a lot of fighters in the (United) States. This is new, I'm excited. I can't wait for the fight."

Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38 knockouts) is an overwhelming favorite against Horn (16-0-1, 11 knockouts), but the Filipino great has not stopped an opponent since his 12th round TKO of Miguel Cotto in 2009.
"I don't know much about him (Horn) but I know he's a fighter. I haven't watched his fights yet but I'm going to get his last three fights and watch them," he said. — Agence France-Presse

An Action Research on the Effectiveness of Differentiated Instruction In Teaching English for Grade Four Classes

By
Mary Joy V. Olicia
Researcher

I. Introduction

Like Science and Math, English is a difficult but an important subject because the curriculum considers it as a tool subject needed to understand the different content subjects. Basically, it is concerned with developing competencies in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and viewing. Speaking includes skills in using the language expressions and grammatical structures correctly in oral communication while writing skill includes readiness skills, mechanics in guided writing, functional and creative writing (K to 12 Curriculum Guide for Grade 4).
The K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum aims to help learners understand that English language is involved in the dynamic social process which responds to and reflects changing social conditions. It is also inextricably involved with values, beliefs and ways of thinking about the person and the world people dwell. The curriculum aims that pupils are given an opportunity to build upon their prior knowledge while utilizing their own skills, interests, styles, and talents.
However, teachers find difficulties in teaching different kinds of pupils with different intellectual capacities, talent or skills, interest, and learning styles especially in heterogeneous groupings of pupils. This situation calls for teachers to create lessons for all pupils based upon their readiness, interests, and background knowledge. Anderson (2007) noted that it is imperative not to exclude any child in a classroom, so a differentiated learning environment must be provided by a teacher.
Differentiated instruction is based on the concept that the teacher is a facilitator of information, while students take the primary role of expanding their knowledge by making sense of their ability to learn differently (Robinson, Maldonado, & Whaley, 2014).
Wilson (2009) argued that differentiated instruction is the development of the simple to the complex tasks, and a difference between individuals that are otherwise similar in certain respects such as age or grade are given consideration. Additionally, Butt and Kusar (2010) stated that it is an approach to planning, so that one lesson may be taught to the entire class while meeting the individual needs of each child.
According to Tomlinson (2009), DI as a philosophy of teaching is based on the premise that students learn best when their teachers accommodate the differences in their readiness levels, interests, and learning profiles. It sees the learning experience as social and collaborative. The responsibility of what happens in the classroom is first to teacher, but also to the learner (Subban, 2006). Additionally, DI presents an effective means to address learner’s variance which avoids the pitfalls of the one-size-fits-all curriculum. Stronge (2004) and Tomlinson (2004b) claimed that addressing student differences and interest enhance their motivation to learn and make them to remain committed and to stay positive as well.
Stravroula (2011) conducted a study in investigating the impact of DI in mixed ability classrooms and found out that the implementation of differentiation had made a big step in facing the negative effects of socio-economic factors on students’ achievement by managing diversity effectively, providing learning opportunities for all students. The positive change in students’ achievement had shown that differentiation can be considered as an effective teaching approach in mixed ability classrooms.
Furthermore, Servilio (cited by Robinson, 2014) studied the effectiveness of using DI to motivate students to read and found out that an average of 83.4% of the students’ grades improved in reading, 12.5% remained the same, and 41% of the grades decreased.
As educator, the teacher-researcher was motivated to conduct this action research on the effectiveness of DI in teaching English on Grade Four pupils for a week-long lesson. She also she wanted to know the effect of this method on the academic performance of the pupils from results of the diagnostic and achievement test.

II. Statement of the Problem

This study determined the effectiveness of conducting DI to Grade Four English class. Specifically, it answered the following.

DepEd to place billiard tables inside the school premises to lessen absences

Schools in the Philippines „nd it di›cult to prevent students from skipping classes. Because of the high population of educational institutions, it’s di›cult to keep track on who among the student population decided to skip class and go elsewhere. The worst part is, these students who are skipping classes are not doing anything productive but are instead wasting their time outside school premises.

Among the worst vices that students have is playing billiards. Billiards establishments are in fact abundant outside school premises. This is the main reason why students are encouraged to skip school and play outside with their classmates.

As a solution, the Department of Education (DepEd) plans on bringing this popular game inside the school.

Ever since the game billiards was declared as an o›cial sport in the Palarong Pambansa at San Jose de Buenavista in Antique, students who have dropped out from school have allegedly come back to study.

Jofran Nyl Tupas, tournament director of billiards in Negros Occidental, DepEd is encouraging school divisions to buy a billiards table for students. Surprisingly, teachers gave a positive reaction to this idea.

“We are putting billiards inside the school para ‘yung mga manlalaro natin hindi na lalabas. Para ‘yung pagte-training natin hindi na lalabas,” said Tupas.

“’Yung programa ng DepEd na sinali ‘yung billiard sa Palarong Pambansa, marami ang bumalik na drop-outs, maraming bumalik na mahilig mag-billiard na bata natin,” he added.

Ryan Dinero, SOCCSKSARGEN coach mentioned that billiards is not a bad game. In fact, he was also proud with the fact that students were coming back to school.

“Before nakikita nila ang bilyaran as a disturbance sa students but now they see it in a positive way na kapag nilagay nila ang billiard sa school, ‘yung ‘di nag-aaral may way na para pumasok siya sa paaralan,” said Dinero.

Do you think bringing billiards inside school is a good idea? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
