An Action Research on the Effectiveness of Differentiated Instruction In Teaching English for Grade Four Classes

By
Mary Joy V. Olicia
Researcher

I. Introduction

Like Science and Math, English is a difficult but an important subject because the curriculum considers it as a tool subject needed to understand the different content subjects. Basically, it is concerned with developing competencies in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and viewing. Speaking includes skills in using the language expressions and grammatical structures correctly in oral communication while writing skill includes readiness skills, mechanics in guided writing, functional and creative writing (K to 12 Curriculum Guide for Grade 4).
The K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum aims to help learners understand that English language is involved in the dynamic social process which responds to and reflects changing social conditions. It is also inextricably involved with values, beliefs and ways of thinking about the person and the world people dwell. The curriculum aims that pupils are given an opportunity to build upon their prior knowledge while utilizing their own skills, interests, styles, and talents.
However, teachers find difficulties in teaching different kinds of pupils with different intellectual capacities, talent or skills, interest, and learning styles especially in heterogeneous groupings of pupils. This situation calls for teachers to create lessons for all pupils based upon their readiness, interests, and background knowledge. Anderson (2007) noted that it is imperative not to exclude any child in a classroom, so a differentiated learning environment must be provided by a teacher.
Differentiated instruction is based on the concept that the teacher is a facilitator of information, while students take the primary role of expanding their knowledge by making sense of their ability to learn differently (Robinson, Maldonado, & Whaley, 2014).
Wilson (2009) argued that differentiated instruction is the development of the simple to the complex tasks, and a difference between individuals that are otherwise similar in certain respects such as age or grade are given consideration. Additionally, Butt and Kusar (2010) stated that it is an approach to planning, so that one lesson may be taught to the entire class while meeting the individual needs of each child.
According to Tomlinson (2009), DI as a philosophy of teaching is based on the premise that students learn best when their teachers accommodate the differences in their readiness levels, interests, and learning profiles. It sees the learning experience as social and collaborative. The responsibility of what happens in the classroom is first to teacher, but also to the learner (Subban, 2006). Additionally, DI presents an effective means to address learner’s variance which avoids the pitfalls of the one-size-fits-all curriculum. Stronge (2004) and Tomlinson (2004b) claimed that addressing student differences and interest enhance their motivation to learn and make them to remain committed and to stay positive as well.
Stravroula (2011) conducted a study in investigating the impact of DI in mixed ability classrooms and found out that the implementation of differentiation had made a big step in facing the negative effects of socio-economic factors on students’ achievement by managing diversity effectively, providing learning opportunities for all students. The positive change in students’ achievement had shown that differentiation can be considered as an effective teaching approach in mixed ability classrooms.
Furthermore, Servilio (cited by Robinson, 2014) studied the effectiveness of using DI to motivate students to read and found out that an average of 83.4% of the students’ grades improved in reading, 12.5% remained the same, and 41% of the grades decreased.
As educator, the teacher-researcher was motivated to conduct this action research on the effectiveness of DI in teaching English on Grade Four pupils for a week-long lesson. She also she wanted to know the effect of this method on the academic performance of the pupils from results of the diagnostic and achievement test.

II. Statement of the Problem

This study determined the effectiveness of conducting DI to Grade Four English class. Specifically, it answered the following.

Teachers can have higher allowances, take-home pay by Jan. 1

Teachers can have higher allowances, take-home pay by Jan. 1

Threatened by a P30 billion cut, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto today called for the rechanneling of DepEd's 2018 budget to "low hanging fruits" which can be used to increase a number of teacher's allowances.

If these "benefit amelioration" items will be added to the income retained when bigger personal income tax exemptions will take effect, the result is a higher take-home pay for public elementary and high school teachers, Recto said.

"We can double the chalk allowance, increase the uniform allowance, implement so-called step increments so that teachers will move up the pay scale, and increase the operating fund of schools," Recto said.
"On top of these, new tax exemption rates so that teachers will either pay zero tax or a smaller tax on their income," he added.

"All of the above are doable, and are in the pipeline. They can take effect in 12 weeks, or by January 1. Kaunting push na lang," Recto said.

Recto said the above are interim measures until a higher pay for teachers is legislated together with the rest of government workers.

Recto said the House of Representatives, citing DepEd's slow use of funds, had cut nearly P30 billion from the agency's building fund for 2018.

"My proposal is that instead of transferring this money to other agencies, why not retain it there but change the intended use, toward the easy to implement, like teacher's allowances," Recto said.

                E. Which of my teaching strategies worked well? Why did these work? - DOWNLOAD

                1. Group work among my students’ works well because I see them all engaged in the activity.
                2. Collaboration is evident and effective during the delivery of my lesson. The students are seen to be very cooperative in learning process.
                3. Giving students more time to explore and discover the task given allows them to make their presentations nice and effective. It teaches them to think of a great presentation.
                4. Allowing students to think of their own strategies on how to present the activity shows their thorough understanding of the lesson and enhances their creativity. Yet guidance of the teacher is very much required.
                5. Grouping is seen to be very effective in every classroom activity because students will learn on how to deal with the different family orientations showed by their classmates. They learn to be flexible.
                6. Creative presentations such as singing, dancing, acting, playing musical instruments are also very effective. Some of them are new to each other yet they work effectively to showcase a creative and relevant theme activity.
                7. Differentiated instruction is very much effective because it caters to the multiple intelligences present in each student.
                8. Profiling students provides the teacher from the better to the best idea on how to deal with them and on what particular strategy would best fit for their kind.
                9. Discussion first, then activity is also found out to be very effective since students in this generation has a very limited attention span.
                10. Video presentations as a springboard to teaching are likewise effective. Students absorb it faster if they are looking at a video; because most of the students these days are bodily kinesthetic and visual learners.
                11. Game as an introduction to a topic was also found out to be very effective as well.
                12. Students tend to understand easy and well if they are enjoying the lesson. Learning at the same time enjoying is effective because a happy class is a learning class.

DepEd finding ways to help teachers in debt

The Department of Education (DepEd) said it is finding viable means to address the growing debt of public school teachers, which has reached a staggering P300 billion as of last year.

In a statement issued Friday, DepEd cited that these measures include “reduction of interest rates on loans through the expansion of the Provident Fund, and coordination with GSIS on a loan buyout that will restructure an employee-borrower’s PLI (private learning institutions) loans to provide lower interest rate on a longer payment term.”

DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones recently signed DepEd Order (DO) 55 or the “Revised Guidelines on the Implementation of PHP4,000 Net Home Pay for DepEd Personnel”.

The department explained that in line with Section 47 of the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2017, DO 55 protects the interest of teachers and other DepEd personnel since it would ensure the PHP4,000 net take home pay.

DO 55 prioritized salary deduction for contributions to the GSIS and Home Development Mutual Fund (HDMF), which include both premiums and loans. Furthermore, the same priority is given to payments for the Bureau of Internal Revenues (BIR) and the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth).

In the statement, DepEd noted that the damage of over-borrowing money has been affecting the teachers’ lives for years.

“This can no longer continue,” it said, adding that it is committed to enable its personnel to reap the fruits of their hard work.
